What condition could indicate the presence of termites?

The presence of termites is often indicated by wood that sounds hollow when tapped. Termites, particularly subterranean species, consume wood from the inside out, leaving the outer surface intact while creating hollow spaces within. When you tap on wood that has been infested, it will produce a distinct hollow sound due to the absence of solid material inside. This auditory cue can be a critical sign for inspectors to investigate further for termite damage.

In contrast, while visible winged insects during summer may suggest termite activity, this is not as definitive without further signs of damage. Winged termites, or swarmers, are a part of their life cycle, but their presence does not confirm that structural damage has occurred. A damp smell in the basement could indicate moisture issues, which may attract termites but does not directly indicate their presence. Cracked windows are typically unrelated to termite activity and are more often a result of settling or structural issues in the building. Thus, detecting hollow-sounding wood is the most reliable indication of a termite infestation.
